Q: “I am getting the equipment put together so I can do your Ultimate MTB Workout Program at home and all I need now is a power rack. I had a friend suggest I get one with a Smith Machine as part of it so that I can start with it until I ge stronger and am ready for the freeweight versions of the exercises. What is your opinion on this?”

A: The “machine” part of the Smith Machine name tells you all you need to know about my opinion on it. I think that, in general, all machines suck for the purposes of becoming a better rider and fitter human being. It will not allow for natural movement, it will not require you to activate your core and balance muscles and it is not “safer” than freeweights.
Save your money and get a regular power rack. Start utilizing the freeweight movements now and you’ll get much better results.
