So if I mostly avoid stimulants during training should I also avoid them during races? With the theory of train how you race race how you train. If I’m not using them as a training tool will using them at a race negatively effect my performance at race time?

Same advise – use it if you need it but don’t rely on them all the time. Or maybe use them for the most important races. Remember that the more you use them the less effective they are so only use ’em when you really need ’em.

Would using energy gels such as Hammer, Gu, that have caffeine be considered as being the type of stimulants you are addressing here?

Yeah, anything that has caffeine in it would be considered a stimulant.
