When I did this I would inevitably feel it on the trail. I would feel my leg drive, power and overall “snappiness” drop off. Sure, it wasn’t a lot – yet – but I could feel it. The trail wasn’t quit as much fun as when I felt stronger and more able on the trail.
I could also feel old injuries starting to bug me again. I’ve got a torn meniscus in my left knee and I could start feel it catch, like it wasn’t as stable as it had been. This, along with other injuries I’ve accrued over the years, would start to slow me down and make me feel worse the next day after hard rides.
All of this would motivate me to get my butt back in the gym and start training again. But I got tired of this cycle and started to wonder if there was a better way…something I could do during those times when I was too busy to train as usual so I could prevent these problems from happening in the first place.
Working with a lot of clients over the years I had also noticed that most of them went through the same problems. However, a lot of them lacked the built in discipline from years and previous training to get back after it and ended up never coming back. I knew that if I could give then something they could do to keep their momentum going until they could get back to a normal training schedule they were much more likely to stick with it and not quit.
So, with all of this in mind I set out to create a simple 15 minute routine that could be done at home with minimal equipment. The workouts needed to be easy to do and impossible to take longer than the promised 15 minutes.
