MTB Performance Training Overview

I realized a few months ago that in order to get a good idea of my training philosophies for mountain biking you had to read several articles and listen to a few podcasts. Since I’ve had a lot of people coming across my stuff for the first time in the last few months I decided to sit down and do a podcast covering my entire philosophy. It is a little over an hour long but it will give you a complete idea on how to best improve your riding performance and how everything ties together.

HI James, i’ve listened to the podcast and the part on where “road training is not necessarily the best way to train for MTB” really caught my attention. Every guy on my team that came in a better place than me on the last 60mi race trained at least once a week on their road bikes. Maybe it is good for XC?

My point was why do you do that ride on a road bike? Why not do it on a mountain bike with slicks on it? If you are going to ride a bike and you are a mountain biker then ride a mountain bike as the fitness you gain is laid on the same movement pattern you need in your race. Riding a road bike for training offers nothing that you would not gain from doing the same ride on a mountain bike and may actually be less effective.

Mtb on the road is the best! I enjoy the ride a lot more and get a great workout plus im able to mix the ride by doing more in town routes with a few pump tracks thrown in and still getting a good 30 to 35 mile ride in , flat pedals of course!

Hey James i am really into what you are doing and while I am discovering all the Road to Mountain bike myths and putting them to the test I like to finally have someone say it. Mountain biking very different from Road!!!! Where can I download the podcast? thanks and I am sure you’ll hear from me. peace!

Your programs and philosophy are revolutionary. I don’t mean “new science” but tying it all together for MTBing. No where, from anyone is this being done. I have been doing your Combo program for the last 10 weeks and know I have found a “workout philosophy” that I will be using for the rest of my riding career. By the way I have been riding and racing for 16 years.
